Manuscript evaluation

Manuscript evaluation service

If you have a major work either completed or in progress, you can send that to me for comprehensive feedback on every aspect of writing and story craft. It doesn’t matter what stage of completion it’s in.

Such feedback is invaluable for a writer’s development. Receiving it early can save a lot of heartbreak and wasted time.

Few new writers understand the brutal and heartless way agents and publishers assess submissions. A commercial operation’s only concern will be whether they can make money from you. They assess your submission on that basis. Therefore, they read looking for a reason to reject you, and they will stop as soon as they find one. Most screening readers don’t even finish a submission’s first page. Usually, the only response writers get is “no thanks” or “not for me”, and sometimes not even that. You will probably never know what the problem was.

Family and friends are unlikely to give helpful advice. The horrible truth is that most never get around to giving you what they promised. If you get anything, it will probably be generically encouraging and positive. Of course writers need that kind of support, but they need detailed, realistic, critical comments even more.

Writers must keep in mind how competitive publishing is. The problem is getting worse too. Agents and publishers essentially demand perfection, especially from new writers.

Therefore, to have any chance of not being rejected immediately, writers need a frank and objective assessment of everything that might dissuade editors and agents. This could be anything from a long list of technical and obscure things that amateurs are unlikely to know. Even if family and friends did know, most would be reluctant to tell you.

Only experienced professionals can provide this. One reason I can respond to you from the perspective of a submissions editor is that I did that job for CSIRO. I helped authors fix problems that were preventing them from being published. I can do the same for you. My three decades of writing and teaching experience further qualifies me to help you.

Of course, I can’t guarantee that you’ll be published. But this kind of feedback makes it much more likely.

We’ll have to discuss rates for each project, probably a lump sum. First you need to discuss your goals with me. Then if you send me a sample, outline, or whatever you have, I’ll give you a competitive quote.

If you proceed, I’ll give you a comprehensive report, bundled with some of the same video time via which I provide writing coaching.
